This official document contains information about the child's birth, such as the place and time of birth, as well as information about the parents. A translation of the birth certificate is usually necessary for official matters abroad. For example, when marrying abroad or changing residence, a translation of a foreign birth certificate may be required, but it may also be for various business or academic purposes.

For the translated copy of the birth certificate to be accepted by offices and authorities and for its authenticity to be officially verified in the target language, the translated birth certificate must be certified. A translation completed by yourself is, therefore, not valid for official purposes. In Austria, this task is performed by sworn and court-certified interpreters. In other countries, such as Portugal or Switzerland, this is done by notarially sworn translators. They confirm with a signature, date, certification formula and round stamp that the translation is truthful and corresponds completely to the original.
It should be noted that both the source document and the certified translation must be presented in the original because even a copy of the translation is not legally valid.
